13 Jun How to make your new town feel like home.
Whether you’re leaving for your first travel nursing assignment or your tenth, it is common to feel nervous. You are entering a new town, new hospital, and chances are you don’t know anyone. But travel nursing is an incredible way to meet incredible people and create new experiences. Being in a new place for just over three months may seem short but there are plenty of ways to make your new town feel like home.
- Decorate your new home! It may sound obvious, but it can seem silly to do so if you’ll only be living there for a short period of time. When your house feels like home you immediately are more comfortable in your setting. Travel nursing should be about experiencing new places, not feeling homesick.
- Get to know your coworkers. When you’re the new nurse it may seem intimidating. It’s like you’re the new kid in school all over again. But have no fear. Put yourself out there and make friends with your coworkers. These are people that you wouldn’t even of had the opportunity to meet if it wasn’t for travel nursing. When you have friends, it becomes easier to explore the city.
- EXPLORE your new town doing something you love. The best way to explore a new place is by doing something you love. If you love to run find a local running group. If you love going to happy hour, invite your coworkers out for drinks. If you enjoy going to museums, ask around to see what the locals recommend. Although every city is different, it’s likely that your new town is full of people who have the same interests that you do. Do what you love and you’ll be sure to find some like minded people who can quickly become friends.
- Mix the old with the new. As wonderful as it is to always do things in your comfort zone, that’s not the only way to explore your new home. Don’t be afraid to branch out and mix things up a little bit; try the local cuisine, see what the night life is like, get outside and fully immerse yourself in the culture.
13 weeks is a short time to live in a place. Before you know it you’ll be off to a new town and on a new adventure. Nursing can be stressful and exhausting so it’s important to take time to relax and enjoy your surroundings. Make new friends, explore the city, and it’s sure to feel like home in no time. From the EmPower team to you, good luck and happy travels!
